When God Doesn’t Budge

2 Corinthians 12:7-9  . . . a thorn in the flesh was given to me: a messenger of Satan to torment me, that I should not be exalted excessively. . . . I begged the Lord three times that it might depart from me. He has said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Most gladly therefore I will rather glory in my weaknesses, that the power of Christ may rest on me.

Hebrews 12:16-18  . . . Esau, who sold his birthright for one meal. For you know that even when he afterward desired to inherit the blessing, he was rejected, for he found no place for a change of mind though he sought it diligently with tears. . . .

Genesis 18:20-28 The Lord said, “Because the cry of Sodom and Gomorrah is great, and because their sin is very grievous, I will go down now, and see whether their deeds are as bad as the reports which have come to me. If not, I will know.”
The men turned from there, and went toward Sodom, but Abraham stood yet before the Lord. Abraham came near, and said, “Will you consume the righteous with the wicked? What if there are fifty righteous within the city? Will you consume and not spare the place for the fifty righteous who are in it? May it be far from you to do things like that, to kill the righteous with the wicked, so that the righteous should be like the wicked. May that be far from you. Shouldn’t the Judge of all the earth do right?”
The Lord said, “If I find in Sodom fifty righteous within the city, then I will spare the whole place for their sake.” Abraham answered, “See now, I have taken it on myself to speak to the Lord, although I am dust and ashes. What if there will lack five of the fifty righteous? Will you destroy all the city for lack of five?” . . .

Notice how humbly Abraham approached this matter. He kept going, reducing the number by five, then ten, at a time, until finally reaching ten, but for some reason he could go no further.

Psalm 18:41 They cried, but there was no one to save; even to the Lord, but he didn’t answer them.

Proverbs 1:28-30 Then they will call on me, but I will not answer. They will seek me diligently, but they will not find me, because they . . . wanted none of my counsel. They despised all my reproof.

Isaiah 1:15  . . . when you make many prayers, I will not hear. . . .

Jeremiah 11:14 Therefore don’t pray for this people. Don’t lift up cry or prayer for them; for I will not hear them in the time that they cry to me because of their trouble.

Jeremiah 15:1-2 Then the Lord said to me, “Though Moses and Samuel stood before me, yet my mind would not turn toward this people. Cast them out of my sight, and let them go out! It will happen, when they ask you, ‘Where shall we go out?’ then you shall tell them, ‘the Lord says:
“Such as are for death, to death;
such as are for the sword, to the sword;
such as are for the famine, to the famine;
and such as are for captivity, to captivity.” ’

Ezekiel 8:18 Therefore I will also deal in wrath. My eye won’t spare, neither will I have pity. Though they cry in my ears with a loud voice, yet I will not hear them.

Ezekiel 14:13-14 Son of man, when a land sins against me by committing a trespass, and I stretch out my hand on it, and break the staff of its bread, and send famine on it, and cut off from it man and animal; though these three men, Noah, Daniel, and Job, were in it, they would deliver only their own souls by their righteousness,” says the Lord God.

Micah 3:4 Then they will cry to the Lord, but he will not answer them. Yes, he will hide his face from them at that time, because they made their deeds evil.

Zechariah 7:13 It has come to pass that, as he called, and they refused to listen, so they will call, and I will not listen,” said the Lord of Armies
