The Australian version of the television newsmagazine, 60 Minutes, interviewed the woman, her alters (personalities), her psychiatrist (who says D.I.D. is not a mental illness but an ingenious way of coping with trauma and gives a person superpowers) and a detective (who, along with other detectives, was profoundly moved by knowing her and bringing her abuser to justice). Mention is made about how EEG analysis shows different results for her different alters. Much more is said that is inspiring and does much to remove the stigma and doubt surrounding Dissociative Identity Disorder.

Things to note before seeing the video:

It is most unusual to have nearly as many alters as this woman.

The video shows her after twenty years of therapy with someone who truly understands DID. She would not have begun with such an awareness of her alters.

No mention is made of any alters growing up or combining with others but most likely this has happened with many of her alters.

It is unfortunate that, at least as presented in the interview, the pursuit of justice seems to have been her primary motivation. Nevertheless, she has secured not only the conviction of her abuser but a degree of justice and vindication for everyone with D.I.D. and for that she deserves unqualified praise.

When it comes to DID, Australia is not in any way more ‘advanced’ than other nations.

The video mercifully excludes the details but, as reported in newspapers throughout the world, Jennifer Haynes suffered such horrors that it was decided to make it a judge-only trial lest merely hearing of what she endured leave jury members psychologically traumatized.

In a press conference outside the courthouse, she urged people with D.I.D. to keep telling their story even if, as was her experience counselors do not believe them.

Police in not just one, but two Australian states believed her and worked hard on securing her abuser’s conviction and he was extradited from the United Kingdom for the trial.

Regrettably, some parts of the world have a statute of limitation – a law that prevents prosecution of certain crimes that occurred more than a certain number of years ago. Where I live (South Australia) a pastor, Andrew Evans, became a politician. His proudest political achievement was to remove the statute of limitation for sexual offences for my state.
