When accused of using satanic power to drive out demons, Jesus replied, If Satan drives out Satan . . . (Matthew 12:24,26). Clearly, Jesus was using the expression drives out Satan to mean drives out demons, Satans agents. He said, Satan has kept bound for eighteen long years (Luke 13:16) the woman bent over by an evil spirit (Luke 13:11). The field is the world, said Jesus, explaining the enormous scope of his parable. And yet despite having the entire planet in focus, he continues, . . . and the enemy who sows them is the devil (Matthew 13:38). In explaining another parable, he said, The seed is the word of God. Those along the path are the ones who hear, and then the devil comes and takes away the word from their hearts . . . (Luke 8:11-12). Though instigated by the devil, the hands-on work was surely done by his agents.
