The instigators of JesusÂ’ death were the High Priest (John 11:49-53) and the chief priests (Matthew 20:18; 26:3-4,13-14; 26:57-66; Luke 23:4-510,13-21; 24:20; John 7:32). This was fitting because Jesus was the ultimate sacrifice and only priests were ordained to offer sacrifices. No amount of study or aspiration would make someone a priest. Not even kings could take on priestly duties (1 Samuel 13:9-14; 2 Chronicles 26:16-21). God ordained that the only way to become a priest was to be born into that position (Numbers 3:10; 16:1-40; 18:7; Hebrews 5:1,4).
