Peter’s Sin

Mark 8:33 But he, turning around, and seeing his disciples, rebuked Peter, and said, “Get behind me, Satan! . . .

According to some manuscripts, this is the exact reply he used when Satan directly confronted Jesus in the wilderness temptations.

Luke 4:8 Jesus answered him, “[Get behind me, Satan.] For it is written, ‘You shall worship the Lord your God, and you shall serve him only.’”

The bracketed words appear in some Bible versions, but not the NIV, and a number of others.

Jesus told Peter (literally) Go behind me, Satan and in Matthew 4:10 Jesus rebuked Satan with Go, Satan ie the first and last words of his rebuke to Peter.

Certainly, Peter received a strong rebuke and Jesus response bears some similarity to his wilderness temptations.
