The guilt-ridden: close to the heart of God
Matthew 11:19 . . . they say, Behold, a gluttonous man and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners! But wisdom is justified by her children. Matthew 21:31-32 . . . Jesus said to them, Most certainly I tell you that the tax collectors and the prostitutes are entering into Gods Kingdom before you. For John came to you in the way of righteousness, and you didnt believe him, but the tax collectors and the prostitutes believed him. When you saw it, you didnt even repent afterward, that you might believe him. Luke 7:37-38,40-44,47,50 Behold, a woman in the city who was a sinner, when she knew that he was reclining in the Pharisees house, she brought an alabaster jar of ointment. Standing behind at his feet weeping, she began to wet his feet with her tears,. . . . Jesus answered him . . . A certain lender had two debtors. The one owed five hundred denarii, and the other fifty. When they couldnt pay, he forgave them both. Which of them therefore will love him most? Simon answered, He, I suppose, to whom he forgave the most. He [Jesus] said to him, You have judged correctly. Turning to the woman, he said to Simon, Do you see this woman? I entered into your house, and you gave me no water for my feet, but she has wet my feet with her tears, and wiped them with the hair of her head. . . . Therefore I tell you, her sins, which are many, are forgiven, for she loved much. But to whom little is forgiven, the same loves little.. . . . He said to the woman, Your faith has saved you. Go in peace. Luke 14:11 For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted. Luke 14:16-18,21-24 But he [Jesus] said to him, A certain man made a great supper, and he invited many people. He sent out his servant at supper time to tell those who were invited, Come, for everything is ready now. They all as one began to make excuses. . . . That servant came, and told his lord these things. Then the master of the house, being angry, said to his servant, Go out quickly into the streets and lanes of the city, and bring in the poor, maimed, blind, and lame. The servant said, Lord, it is done as you commanded, and there is still room. The lord said to the servant, Go out into the highways and hedges, and compel them to come in, that my house may be filled. For I tell you that none of those men who were invited will taste of my supper. Luke 16:15 . . . that which is exalted among men is an abomination in the sight of God. Luke 18:10-14 Two men went up into the temple to pray; one was a Pharisee, and the other was a tax collector. The Pharisee stood and prayed to himself like this: God, I thank you, that I am not like the rest of men, extortionists, unrighteous, adulterers, or even like this tax collector. I fast twice a week. I give tithes of all that I get. But the tax collector, standing far away, wouldnt even lift up his eyes to heaven, but beat his breast, saying, God, be merciful to me, a sinner! I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other; for everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but he who humbles himself will be exalted. Galatians 2:16 yet knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law but through faith in Jesus Christ, even we believed in Christ Jesus, that we might be justified by faith in Christ, and not by the works of the law, because no flesh will be justified by the works of the law. Romans 3:20 Because by the works of the law, no flesh will be justified in his sight. For through the law comes the knowledge of sin. Romans 9:30-33 What shall we say then? That the Gentiles, who didnt follow after righteousness, attained to righteousness, even the righteousness which is of faith; but Israel, following after a law of righteousness, didnt arrive at the law of righteousness. Why? Because they didnt seek it by faith, but as it were by works of the law. They stumbled over the stumbling stone; even as it is written, Behold, I lay in Zion a stumbling stone and a rock of offense; and no one who believes in him will be disappointed. Back |
