Christian joy is not because of circumstances, but in spite of them. It is such a peculiar mix that Paul described himself as sorrowful, yet always rejoicing (2 Corinthians 6:10). Just as answered prayer depends on us praying, so joy depends on us rejoicing. And just as prayer can be so critical and yet can sometimes be the last thing we feel like doing, so it is with being joyful.
