In his greener, younger days, Dr Neil T. Anderson was summoned to a hospital waiting room where a couple from his church sat in shock as their son teetered between life and death. They sat and sat, until finally the news broke. The boy was dead. At that crucial moment words treacherously abandoned Neil, fleeing like guilt-stricken cowards from a decisive battle. The parents sobbed. Neil could do nothing but cry helplessly with them. Finally he dragged himself home in utter defeat. Years later he met the couple again and one of their first acts was to profusely thank Neil for the way he had so powerfully ministered to them on the night they lost their son. Neil was stunned. He had been sure he had failed them. Instead, he had done one of the greatest things one human can do for another. Much heartache could be averted in the body of Christ if we could learn to mourn with those who mourn (Romans 12:15) not necessarily shed tears, but unashamedly embrace the pain of others, and let it be obvious that if one part [of Christs body] suffers, every part suffers with it (1 Corinthians 12:26).
