Jesus’ Eating Habits

Jesus criticized for “eating and drinking” with “sinners”

Luke 5:29-30 Levi made a great feast for him in his house. There was a great crowd of tax collectors and others who were reclining with them. Their scribes and the Pharisees murmured against his disciples, saying, “Why do you eat and drink with the tax collectors and sinners?”

Luke 7:34 The Son of Man has come eating and drinking, and you say, ‘Behold, a gluttonous man, and a drunkard; a friend of tax collectors and sinners!’

Luke 15:2 The Pharisees and the scribes murmured, saying, “This man welcomes sinners, and eats with them.”

Luke 19:7 When they saw it, they all murmured, saying, “He has gone in to lodge with a man who is a sinner.”

Jesus often dining with Pharisees (people fanatical about enforcing Jewish religious law)

Luke 7:36 One of the Pharisees invited him to eat with him. He entered into the Pharisee’s house, and sat at the table.

Luke 11:37 Now as he spoke, a certain Pharisee asked him to dine with him. He went in, and sat at the table.

Luke 14:1 When he went into the house of one of the rulers of the Pharisees on a Sabbath to eat bread, they were watching him. (Emphasis mine.)

Further examples of Jesus eating with a wide range of different people

John 2:1-2 The third day, there was a marriage in Cana of Galilee. Jesus’ mother was there. Jesus also was invited, with his disciples, to the marriage.

Luke 10:38,40 As they went on their way, he entered into a certain village, and a certain woman named Martha received him into her house. . . . But Martha was distracted with much serving.
