Treating People Differently

But Loving them Equally

You might love your husband/wife, your baby and your teen so intensely that you could never choose between them. In a heartbeat you would give your life for any of them. Nevertheless, love would compel you to treat them differently, out of respect for their differing needs, desires and abilities. It would not be love to ignore their individuality. To treat each of them exactly the same would be unintelligent and coldly mechanical, and God is none of those things.

A good coach with several athletes under his care will personalize their training regime, treating them differently because that is the only way to maximize their potential. In fact, he will treat the same athlete differently from session to session, according to the athlete’s current fitness level, ability, need for rest, how soon it is to a competition, and so on. It would be ridiculous to suppose this indicates fluctuating love.

After commencing our life in Christ, each of us will have spiritual mountain top experiences and times in dark valleys. Physically and mentally, too, there will be times when we barely have a care in the world and times so oppressive that life seems unbearable.

Consider those occasions when you have been equally devoted to God. Suppose an exact copy of those times were made, changing nothing other than randomizing the timeline and altering your physical appearance so that you do not recognize yourself. Suppose you meet your exact duplicate, with time being the only difference between the two of you. There would probably be many instances when you would be sorely tempted to be jealous of your clone and to imagine that God favors the other over you, even though you would be viewing the way God treated you on a different occasion.

Our perception as to who is truly blessed of God is usually completely false. For an explanation, see God Isn’t fair? and the pages it leads to, but so that you don’t get lost I urge you note the web address of the page you are on.
