Like an oppressive addiction to chemical highs, addictions to sexual highs usually start off highly enjoyable but gradually turn into life controlling habits that eat into ones dignity.
Psychologists Dr. R. Earle and Dr. G. Crow have a revealing book about people with what we might call an unnatural obsession with sex. Even when the sexual addiction does not involve partners but impersonal forms of sex such as masturbation, fantasy or porn, these psychologists discovered something quite remarkable. They write in their book subtitled Recognizing, Understanding and Overcoming Sex Addiction :
Believe it or not, the driving force behind most sex addicts compulsion
At first thought, sex addiction seems impossible. After all, sex is completely natural. But so is eating, and yet people can find themselves so dominated by food that they literally eat themselves to death. Then there are those with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder who find themselves addicted to such things as washing their hands, even though hand washing is obviously nowhere nearly as pleasurable as sex.

Mysteries
The mysteries of sex addiction can be illustrated by a medical condition. People with low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) crave sweet things. It gives them an immediate energy burst - a fleeting high - followed by an unpleasant low. They seem to need sugar, and yet it is medically proven that this is the last thing they need. Given a regular intake of complex carbohydrates instead of sugar, their lows disappear, along with their excessive craving for sweet things. Similarly, although sex addicts crave sex and it gives them a momentary high, it produces lows that convince them that they need even more sexual stimulation. Their real need, however, is for a constant intake of genuine, full-blooded love - not the cotton candy stuff that often passes for love, but a love so deep and satisfying as to seem unobtainable. Nevertheless, that degree of satisfaction can be found. See You Can Find Love
