False Accusations

Accused of Blasphemy

Matthew 9:2-3 Behold, they brought to him a man who was paralyzed, lying on a bed. Jesus, seeing their faith, said to the paralytic, “Son, cheer up! Your sins are forgiven you.” Behold, some of the scribes said to themselves, “This man blasphemes.”

John 8:58-59 Jesus said to them, “Most certainly, I tell you, before Abraham came into existence, I AM.” Therefore they took up stones to throw at him, but Jesus was hidden, and went out of the temple, having gone through the middle of them, and so passed by.

John 10:33 The Jews answered him, “We don’t stone you for a good work, but for blasphemy: because you, being a man, make yourself God.”

Accused of Breaking the Sabbath

Mark 2:23-24 One Sabbath He [Jesus] was going on the Sabbath day through the grain fields, and his disciples began, as they went, to pluck the ears of grain. The Pharisees said to him, “Behold, why do they do that which is not lawful on the Sabbath day?”

Mark 3:2 They watched him, whether he would heal him on the Sabbath day, that they might accuse him.

Luke 13:14 The ruler of the synagogue, being indignant because Jesus had healed on the Sabbath, said to the multitude, “There are six days in which men ought to work. Therefore come on those days and be healed, and not on the Sabbath day!”

John 5:9-10,16,18 Immediately, the man was made well, and took up his mat and walked. Now it was the Sabbath on that day. So the Jews said to him who was cured, “It is the Sabbath. It is not lawful for you to carry the mat.”  . . . For this cause the Jews persecuted Jesus, and sought to kill him, because he did these things on the Sabbath. . . . For this cause therefore the Jews sought all the more to kill him, because he not only broke the Sabbath, but also called God his own Father, making himself equal with God.

John 9:14,16 It was a Sabbath when Jesus made the mud and opened his eyes. . . . Some therefore of the Pharisees said, “This man is not from God, because he doesn’t keep the Sabbath.” . . .

Accused of Breaking Holy Traditions

Matthew 15:2 “Why do your disciples disobey the tradition of the elders? For they don’t wash their hands when they eat bread.”

Accused of Hedonism

Matthew 11:19 The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, ‘Behold, a gluttonous man and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!’ . . .
