God’s Gender

* * *

Despite abundant exceptions to gender stereotypes, in general, each gender has certain strengths. I believe the unique strengths of each gender better reflect corresponding aspects of the divine nature.

God’s uniqueness creates a linguistic dilemma. There is a real sense in which God is one, not plural, and God might not, in the full human sense, be male or female, but neither could God be referred to as ‘it’. In fact, the Creator is so warm and intensely personal that alongside him, we are the ones who are cold and impersonal. We find it difficult to think– and certainly to speak – of a highly intelligent, personal being who has no gender, since, in most languages at least, some pronoun must be chosen.
